PITTSBURGH, PA (October 20, 2016) – The Office of Mayor William Peduto, City of Pittsburgh Department of Public Works (DPW) and Councilman Dan Gilman today celebrated a successful deployment of a pilot recycling program that deployed 35 new recycling containers in eight public parks throughout the city.
“We are very fortunate to have beautiful public parks and open spaces throughout Pittsburgh,” said Mayor William Peduto. “I’d like to thank Public Works and Citiparks personnel for their efforts to preserve our public spaces and reduce our impact on local landfills.”
In May 2016, new recycling receptacles were placed in the following Eastern Parks Division locations: 6 in Mellon Park (Upper and Lower), 5 in Frick Park, 1 in Swisshelm Park, 1 in Davis Park, 1 in East Hills Park, 1 in Wightman Park and 1 in Baxter Park.
“I have strongly advocated for expanded recycling options in the City of Pittsburgh and this grant helps to do just that. The 35 new recycling containers are a welcome addition to my district and all eight of the City parks that received them,” said Councilman Dan Gilman. “I’d like to thank the Department of Public Works team for their work in securing the grant to encourage recycling and help ensure that our world-class parks remain green, clean, and beautiful.”
In August 2016, DPW was awarded a Park Recycling Bin Grant, made possible by Dr Pepper Snapple Group and Keep America Beautiful, that enabled the expansion of the recycling bin program to Schenley Park. In September 2016, 18 new recycling bins were installed at various locations in Schenley Park, including the Oval, Junction Hollow Field and at every park shelter permitted for rental.
“We have been monitoring usage of the recycling receptacles in our parks and I’m happy to report that they’ve been getting a lot of use,” said Public Works Director Mike Gable. “Our hope is to continue to expand the parks recycling program and have recycling infrastructure available in all public parks and facilities.”
Now in its fourth year, the Dr Pepper Snapple/Keep American Beautiful public park recycling grant program has awarded more than 3,400 recycling bins to Keep America Beautiful affiliates, local governments and other community organizations across 28 states to expand the availability of recycling. This investment in recycling infrastructure has improved recycling accessibility and convenience in a variety of park settings, including neighborhood and larger regional parks, beaches, athletic fields and walking trails.
