According to the National Science Foundation, “In the 21st century, scientific and technological innovations have become increasingly important as we face the benefits and challenges of both globalization and a knowledge-based economy. To succeed in this new information-based and highly technological society, all students need to develop their capabilities in STEM to levels much beyond what was considered acceptable in the past.” In keeping with this spirit, on Friday, October 7th, Google will host the Pittsburgh Geek Street Fair — an interactive event to inspire kids to pursue STEM (science, technology, engineering, math) and computer science careers.
Technology companies, community based organizations, museums, and content creators have partnered with Google for this event to provide a plethora of fun actives for students, including:
THE ANDY WARHOL MUSEUM
Using a built-in camera and an iPad you will be able to take a photograph and transform the image through cropping, exposing, and underpainting to create your own digital silk screen image.
LED Pins, make a wearable circuit with Assemble!
BIOROBOTICS LAB, CARNEGIE MELLON
Modular Snake and Walking Robots
Snake robots can fit into hard-to-reach places, and walking robots can travel through challenging terrain. Our robots are also modular, so we can easily change their design for a new task.
BIRDBRAIN TECHNOLOGIES LLC
Arts, Crafts, Robots!
Come meet the BirdBrain Technologies team and play with Hummingbird kits and Finch robots.
CARNEGIE LIBRARY OF PITTSBURGH
The Finch Race
The Finch robot provides an introduction to basic programming concepts. Tell the Finch what to do and it will zoom around, change color, or buzz!
CARNEGIE SCIENCE CENTER MOBILE FAB LAB
Laser Cut Make and Takes
Attendees will create a small, laser-cut project near our trailer. Participants can then tour the Mobile Fab Lab and watch as large batches of the project are cut on two 40 watt Epilog laser cutters. Additionally, other CNC machines, such as 3D printers, will be running and available for viewing. This project is open to all ages.
CENTER FOR CREATIVITY
Making Basic Circuits for Making Electronic Music
Participants will have the opportunity to construct basic circuits out of littleBits and MakeyMakey in order to create various styles of synthesizers. Students will learn concepts of circuitry while experimenting with various ways to manipulate sound, including using delays, filters, micro sequencers, and oscillators.
THE ELLIS SCHOOL
Experiment with Ellis!
We are excited to teach you several thrilling, hands-on activities that encourage you to explore your inner-scientist. Come build, code, design, experiment, and have fun with The Ellis School!
Explore Your World
Come learn about the world around you through fun, interactive games and experiences like Google Expeditions, Chrome Music Lab, Quick Draw and Science Journal.
IAM Prize Pickin
Come see IAM Robotics’s warehouse automation technology. Picking prizes all day long!
IDEATE – CARNEGIE MELLON UNIVERSITY
Life Size Robot Puppets
Come assemble a robot puppet using our modular mechanical robot kit. Use an array of parts and mechanical components to create new characters and then operate our new machines by hand to tell a story.
MAKER FAIRE PITTSBURGH
Maker Faire Button Making
Maker Faire Pittsburgh is October 15-16. Make a Maker Faire button and see what our Faire has in store (epic mini electric car racing, and a drone zone perhaps)!
META MESH WIRELESS COMMUNITIES
Get Connected with Meta Mesh!
Ethernet cables are integral in providing Internet to homes and businesses. They can also cost a lot of money! We will teach you how to build your own cables so that you can better understand their purpose as well as save you money.
MONTOUR SCHOOL DISTRICT
Virtual Reality in Action with Montour School
Experience 21st century hands-on learning through Montour’s Virtual Immersion Lab including zSpace Studio to compare, dissect, analyze, measure, annotate and explore thousands of 3D models.
Say goodbye to boring chemistry classes and hello to Happy Atoms, a molecular chemistry kit that actually lets you play with atoms. And once you’ve built something cool, take a picture of it using the interactive app to learn more about what you’ve discovered.
THE SPROUT FUND
Make a Meme
Make your own meme using a bit of HTML and your own creativity. You can also try out the world of 360 images using Social VR!
Bring the Beat Back
Create a interactive mural.
TechShop + LittleBits
Come build cars and robots using magnetic circuit blocks from Little Bits.
This event is free and open to the public, but it’s strongly encouraged that large school groups register ahead of time to speed up event entrance and so that they can provide the groups with arrival details. Please click here for more details and for group registration.
