Friday, April 29th is Arbor Day — a holiday in which we’re all encouraged to plant and care for trees. It was founded in 1872 and an estimated one million trees were planted on the very first Arbor Day. This Arbor Day, Tree Pittsburgh, in partnership with the Pittsburgh Shade Tree Commission, will be celebrating the holiday by holding a tree seedling giveaway in Pittsburgh’s Market Square!

The event starts at 10:00 a.m. with the seedling giveaway starting at 11:30 a.m. The giveaway will end when the seedlings run out, or 2:00 p.m. (whichever comes first).

Whether you want a tree for its intrinsic beauty or for the myriad of benefits they provide to our environment, including combating climate change, cleaning our air, preventing soil erosion, and reducing storm run-off and the possibility of flooding, this is your chance to pick one up for free!

The following tree seedlings will be given away:

  • Tulip Poplar
  • White Oak
  • Yellow Buckeye
  • Umbrella Magnolia
  • Pawpaw

And, for those who enjoy a more spirited celebration, there is Arbrew Days — a neighborhood-driven event in Lawrenceville held on the 29th and 30th from 5:00 to 11:00 p.m. Many restaurants there will be hosting specials during Arbrew Days that will help celebrate and support Lawrenceville’s urban forest. Order the special drink at any participating location and a portion of the sale will go to ReLeaf Lawrenceville.

However you choose to celebrate the day, be sure to use the hashtag #ArborDayPGH when posting on social media!
