An EcoInnovation District is an area “dedicated to sustainability, innovative development practices and inclusive job growth.” The Uptown/West Oakland EcoInnovation District will combine the goals of both an EcoDistrict (a resilient and sustainable bottom-up development area) and an Innovation District (an area where leading-edge anchor institutions/companies cluster in close proximity to transit-accessible, mixed-use housing, office, and retail for maximum job growth and economic opportunity).

This new model for urban growth focuses on the Uptown and West Oakland neighborhoods as an area that offers both challenges and unique opportunities, having been a long overlooked area with a legacy of disinvestment. Yet, one that is strategically located between two of the three largest “city centers” in Pennsylvania — Downtown and Oakland.

The Uptown/West Oakland EcoInnovation District Public Open House Launch Party on Thursday, February 25th will give you the chance to join the City, Uptown Partners, Oakland Planning and Development Corp., and those neighborhoods as they kick off the planning process with a fun event that “signals the start of robust community engagement to create the City’s most sustainable and equitable district plan.” The open house will include refreshments and music.
