Strong Women, Strong Girls (SWSG) originated on the Harvard campus in 2000 with six women mentoring 30 girls. It incorporated as a nonprofit in Boston in 2004 and added a Pittsburgh branch in 2006. Now, it’s expanded to providing programming to over 1,400 girls in Boston, Pittsburgh and several pilot programs at over 100 school and community center partner sites! Like its name says, SWSG mission is to support strong mentoring relationships between women and pre-adolescent girls. It concentrates its efforts on serving underserved local communities–raising ambition and combating the dangers of low self-esteem among these girls.
The Pittsburgh Strong Awards are designed to celebrate one outstanding woman and three phenomenal young women (college, high school, elementary/middle) whose work and leadership demonstrates a commitment to empowering women and girls throughout the greater Pittsburgh region.
Do you know a woman or girl who embodies SWSG’s values, who acts as a positive role model for girls in the local community, and supports the needs and dreams of young girls? If so, you have until 5:00 p.m., tomorrow, June 15th to make a nomination. To nominate an adult woman, please click here and click here to nominate a girl/young woman (3rd grade through college).
Winners will be awarded at the Strong Awards Breakfast which serves as SWSG’s annual fundraiser and award ceremony. The event will be held on Friday, August 21, 2015 at 8:00AM at the Pittsburgh Doubletree by Hilton.
