This weekend, in cities across the globe, a battle has begun–the Global Startup Battle–a grassroots movement of entrepreneurs competing to pitch their best ideas, form teams around the top ideas (as determined by popular vote), create a business model/code/design and make a final presentation. Categories include Developers, Designers and Non-technical. It all takes place over a 54-hour period.

Startup Weekend Pittsburgh will take place at AlphaLab Gear & Thrill Mill in East Liberty November 21st to 23rd. Past participants have included:

  • Inktd: a platform for tattoo artists to book their clients in an orderly manner
  • MaxMyTV: an integrated social media and home media tool
  • MegaBits: a massive multiplayer online game that uses geolocation
  • Nymbus: a way to integrate mobile technologies into the live event experience

There are still a limited amount of tickets and sponsorships left. Winning teams from each city’s events move forward to compete with one another via a global video competition in the Global Startup Battle.

Additionally, there are several themed tracks that offer different prizes which everyone is eligible to enter, regardless of local event placement. And, everyone can help to tweet their city to victory in a Hashtag Battle which will continue until November 26th with winners announced on Dec 2nd. The hashtag for Pittsburgh is #SWPgh, so start tweeting!
