People’s lives often don’t follow a straight trajectory. For women in particular, the death of a spouse, a divorce, a separation, or the need to leave an abusive relationship can turn a woman’s life upside-down. A woman facing such a major change may need legal and financial help. She may have to enter the job market for the very first time. She may have never handled her financial affairs. She may have lost her health insurance that was provided through her spouse’s job. She may need to find a new place to live for the first time in decades. The Center for Women helps these women in their goal to obtain financial literacy and economic independence.

The Center for Women was co-established by the National Council of Jewish Women (NCJW), Pittsburgh Section and the Jewish Women’s Foundation of Greater Pittsburgh (JWF). They provide a variety of programming, services and referrals, including numerous workshops in July. Here are highlights of a few of these, but check out their website for all of them:

Getting the Care You Need: Using Health Insurance to Stay Healthy
WHEN: July 7, 2014 @ 6:00 pm – 7:30 pm

COST: $10 Suggested Donation
WHAT: This seminar reviews what health insurance is and how it works; how to find a doctor and prepare for appointments and make the most out of your visit. Rachael will also be on hand to answer questions about applying for health insurance and qualifying for subsidies through the Health Insurance Marketplace.

Do What You Are: Discover the Ideal Career for You through Understanding Your Personality Type

COST: Suggested Donation: $10
WHAT: Take the Myers-Briggs Type Indicator to learn more about your personality and how to determine a career path based on your personality type.

Savvy Social Security Planning
WHEN: July 31, 2014 @ 10:30 am – 12:30 pm
WHERE: The Center for Women, 1620 Murray Avenue, Pittsburgh, PA 15217
COST: $10 Suggested Donation
WHAT: Learn about Social Security information such as: how decisions you make in your 60s can determine the amount of income you’ll have in your 80s; how to take advantage of spousal benefits, survivor benefits, divorced spouse benefits; and more.

Even if you’re not currently a woman in transition, you can pass this along to someone who is. You can also help The Center for Women by volunteering or making a donation.
