Saturday, August 3rd, saw a celebration of some of the best of our area’s youth at the seventh annual 2013 Shyne Awards. These awards give young adults (ages 13 -19) the opportunity to “shyne” by recognizing positive achievements in such categories as academics, the arts and service to community and the ministry. It also provides the opportunity to present a more balanced picture of young adults in the media and to give positive examples for others. The awards were founded by The Darkins Group’s Darnell Drewery and Orlana Darkins Drewery.

Saturday’s event was held at the August Wilson Center. The festivities included a red carpet walk by the honorees, a performance by national recording artist Ambition, and was hosted by actor Hosea Chanchez from BET’s hit show “The Game.”

According to the Tribune-Review, notables at the event included: “Miyoshi Anderson; Dr. Marcia Sturdivant; Valerie Dixon; Bill Blakey; Gary Gunter; Dr. Regina Holley, Demetria Boccella; City Council’s Bill Peduto; Mark Lewis; Marce Nixon Washington; the Rev. Ben Calvert; Richard Carrington; Kathi Elliott; Felecia McFarlene; and Stephanie Jimenez.” Their article also includes a wonderful gallery of photographs from the award show.

We congratulate The 2013 Shyne Awards honorees!
