Organizes Core Communities in Crisis Task Force to demand tax fairness

In an effort to protect residents in Pittsburgh and other cities throughout Pennsylvania, Bill Peduto is calling on the Pennsylvania Municipal League’s Core Communities in Crisis Task Force to urge the General Assembly to halt an effort to amend the PA Constitution. Peduto is organizing the group to rally against Senate Bill 4 and demand tax fairness.

Senate Bill 4, sponsored by Senator Mike Brubaker (R-Lancaster), has been rushed through committee without a public hearing and with no input from the municipalities and taxpayers that will be affected. The proposal seeks to amend the Pennsylvania Constitution and give the state legislature the sole authority in deciding what is or is not a purely public charity. It could weaken the criteria that an organization must meet to be considered a purely public charity and be eligible for tax exemption and could severely impact the budgets of cities throughout PA by denying them the tools to fairly assess the status of large, land-owning organizations within their borders.

The Committee was formed in order to create statewide policies that would benefit Pennsylvania’s older cities, most of whom are facing financial distress. Councilman Peduto continues to be an active member.
