HOW DO YOU WIN? BY MAKING HISTORY!

People always ask me the same question: How do you beat an incumbent? There is only one answer: You build the stronger team. In Pittsburgh Democratic politics, that requires an army of committed volunteers, other elected leaders as well as leaders from labor and corporate communities, a network of neighborhood activists and those who organize for the betterment of our city… And, it takes money.

MAKING HISTORY I: MOST FUNDS RAISED BY A CHALLENGER

To beat an incumbent, you have to have the resources to run a full campaign. I was honored to receive a record-breaking amount of support these past three months. In just those three months, we have raised more funds than any challenger who has faced an incumbent Mayor in Pittsburgh’s history. In 2001, then-Councilman Bob O’Connor reported an unprecedented $279,623 raised for his Year End Report. He had two years to raise those funds and there were no campaign limits in 2001. Today, we are honored to report that we have topped Bob’s record and will file our report showing $329,671 raised — in JUST 3 MONTHS and with strict CONTRIBUTION LIMITS. But, this is just the beginning. Together, we have proven that we have the financial backing to win this race.

MAKING HISTORY II: LARGEST ANNOUNCEMENT FOR MAYOR

Last month, I announced my candidacy for Mayor in a former steel mill. It was fitting given that my grandfathers spent their lives working in similar mills. But, it was special because of the enormous outpouring of support our campaign received on the very first day. On a cold December night, over 1,300 people joined with us to say that we can do better — we must do better. People from all backgrounds, all parts of the city and region, joined together on that night — and they made history. The 1,300 people who joined together on that night — the first day of our campaign — was the largest group assembled for a Mayoral Announcement in recent history. Together, we have proven that we have the support of the people to win this race. You can view a video of my announcement below:

MAKING HISTORY III: LARGEST VOLUNTEER ARMY

Over the past 3 months, we have been able to earn the support of elected officials, labor leaders, community leaders and other influential decision makers throughout Pittsburgh. To be certain, in the months ahead, we will share the stage with courageous leaders who are committed to creating a New Coalition for Pittsburgh. Leaders who are not afraid to break the rusty, old shackles of the Political Machine which continue to hold us back. Leaders who believe in the promise of Pittsburgh — one which honors its past and has a strong vision for its future. Leaders who believe our best days are ahead of us. But, it will require cooperation, commitment and courage. They will, however, not be alone. Over the past three months, we have been able to register over 700 volunteers to join us. People like you. People who want to be part of this coalition. Through our Run Bill Run cards, our active social media and being out in the neighborhoods every single day and night, we have created the largest political army in Pittsburgh. Together, we have proven that we have the volunteers to win this race.
