We all know that Pittsburgh is an awesome city. Awesome Pittsburgh rewards ideas each month that add to the general awesomeness of our city with a $1,000 grant. They’re looking for projects which have both local impact and global resonance. Awesome Pittsburgh is one of over 40 chapters of The Awesome Foundation, a “worldwide network of people devoted to forwarding the interest of awesomeness in the universe.” These grants come with no strings attached. They are, in the words of one of the Awesome Foundation’s trustees, “a micro-genius grant for flashes of micro-brilliance.”
Examples of past winning projects in Pittsburgh include:
- Pittsburgh Light Disco, a marquee-type public art installation that will display images of Pittsburgh’s past and present.
- Exquisite Machine, an interactive creative writing project that will engage the community in collective storytelling.
- Dickson Elementary Outdoor Art Garden, a safe and creative outside environment for kids to express, explore, and play.
- Community Steps Cooperative, an initiative focused on preserving and promoting the many steps and stairways found within the City of Pittsburgh.
If you have an awesome idea for Pittsburgh, you can apply online through The Awesome Foundation’s website here. The deadline is the 15th of each month. They’re looking for projects which have the qualities of “wowness,” utility, niceness, bigness/local impact and environmental impact. Awesome Pittsburgh has additional tips for applying at their website here.
