This month will see the world premiere of Stefanie Zadravec’s play The Electric Baby by Quantum Theatre. Founded in 1990, Quantum Theatre is known for innovative productions which are staged in non-theatre locations that have included abandoned industrial sites, a horse barn and a tombstone-covered plot at Allegheny Cemetery. The show is a collaboration of Quantum Theatre, Children’s Hospital of Pittsburgh of UPMC, and The Waldorf School of Pittsburgh. The play will take place at The Waldorf School.

Stefanie Zadravec is an award-winning playwright (and actor) currently living in Brooklyn, NY. She’s a current resident playwright at New Dramatists and The Women’s Project Lab. Her plays have been produced/developed at The Kennedy Center, The Women’s Project, PlayPenn, Theater J, and The Working Theater, among others. Her play, Honey Brown Eyes, won the 2009 Helen Hayes Award for Best New Play or Musical.

Zadravec set The Electric Baby in Pittsburgh. Her family came to our city when her son, Colin, suffered a pulmonary illness that could not be diagnosed by their local NY hospitals. They were eventually sent to Pittsburgh Children’s, where specialist Dr. Geoffrey Kurland was able to finally diagnose his rare interstitial lung disease as NEHI (Neruoendocrine Hyperplasia of Infancy). Colin is one of only about 250 known cases of this disease.

The Electric Baby concerns a sick child too. Via Quantum Theatre:

Pittsburgh is the setting for The Electric Baby. The mysterious, titular character is fragile, yet powerful. He exerts an influence on the Pittsburghers around him. And he glows like the moon. Natalia, his Romanian-born mother, and Ambimbola, his Nigerian-born father, are working fast to pour their strengths and stories into him, even as fateful events have separated the family. Maybe a triangulation with the moon at its apex can unite them. And maybe they can heal the Pittsburghers who end up in their story for very good reasons. Perhaps they can also heal the Pittsburghers who orbit their story.

The cast includes: Robin Abramson (Natalia), Monteze Freeland (Ambimbola), Laurie Klatscher (Helen), Nick Lehane (Dan/Dave/Nurse) and John Shepard (Reed Casey).
